Powered by a 12-volt DC power source, you can now enjoy extended hours in cold weather activities with one easy connection to your power source. Why does Gerbing's heated clothing work so well to keep you enveloped in a soothing blanket of warmth?
Gerbings Hi-Density
Heat Panels
One of the truly unique features of our heated clothing is our High-Density heat pads. Rather than apply the resistive wire directly to the garment, we first sew it into a special fabric pad. Each pad is engineered to produce a specific amount of heat. The design of these pads makes them extremely durable and nearly unnoticeable. And we sew our pads directly into the inside lining, so the heating pads are close to your body.
Even Distribution of Heat
The basis for our soothing warmth is high-density heat: over a hundred of inches of heating wire is sewn into each heating pad. These pads are then strategically located throughout the garment to provide a natural and balanced heat output. Instead of hot spots or cold spots, warmth is evenly distributed throughout. The result? A warm, comfortable ride in even cold, windy, and damp weather. Just plug into a 12-volt source of power. You feel soothing warmth just moments after plugging in.
Gerbing's Interconnected
System
Our heated clothing forms a true interconnected system in which every item
connects to everything else. You can wear a jacket, gloves, pants, and socks
with only a single connection to your battery. For example, our gloves and
socks plug into our three-prong connecting harness, or directly into our pants
or jacket, as shown in this diagram of our interconnected system of heated
clothing.
Gerbings Quality Materials
Our products contain very lightweight thermally efficient microfiber insulation to help distribute the heat evenly throughout which keeps heat from escaping. We also use coated fabrics and seam sealing to help keep out the cold and wetness out and the heat in.
Gerbings Experience
Gerbing's is the company that introduced the world to heated jacket-liners and heated pants-liners, and we have been designing and making them for over a quarter of a century. We have now taken our technology and experience to new markets and products, warming the world, one person at a time.
Chances are you have endured your fair share of days on your bike riding in nasty weather. A good riding suit helps keep you dry, but what about warm? Sitting on a motorcycle doesn't require much body movement, and when you're not moving, you are going to get cold faster.
Whether you're a commuter, spend time touring, or long-distance riding is your passion, there's one thing that contributes to your comfort, concentration, and skill: You love to ride, but you hate the cold! The season is short enough, and you want to extend your riding season. We want to go for another ride, but our bodies get stiff, our hands get chilled and our fingers go numb. How can you expect to enjoy the ride and be safe when you can't feel your fingers and toes, and your neck's stiff from "scrunching" down in your jacket?
Gerbing's offers a variety of heated products that will help you enjoy your colder weather riding even more. We have products to keep the dexterity in your fingers (needed to operate clutch and throttle), toes (braking and putting your foot down at stops), and your entire torso. If you're body's wasting energy shivering, you're not in complete control. There are plenty of things out there that as a rider you can't control, but now you can ride as warm as you wish.
Personal Comfort
You know how it feels when you put on warm clothes right out of the dryer or you stand next to the campfire? You feel Toasty, right? All of us who live anywhere, even in the warmest climates, face the cold at one time or another. Maybe it's a cold morning waking up in the tent, or simply just sitting in the stands at a soccer game cheering on your kids. We have products that will help you better enjoy these situations by keeping you cozy and warm. Most people are amazed at how warm and comfortable they can be, where before they were cold and shivering. Your motorcycle season won't be as short, because now all you have to worry about is the available traction, and not your body heat!
Personal Safety
A risk factor (danger) can be increased by a factor of two or more when traveling by motorcycle. All you can think about is: How soon will it be till I can get warm? Speed increases and reactions get slower. Wind, rain and cold temperatures make it nearly impossible for the body to counteract the cold, leaving a person vulnerable to these adverse health conditions. A safety solution is Gerbing's Heated Clothing!
Even when wearing some of the latest, hi-tech clothing, people still suffer from the cold. The lack of body movement, hours of prolonged exposure, wind chill and humidity all can cause someone to be uncomfortably cold to the point of danger even if dressed "appropriately." Symptoms include the following.
Permanent Nerve Damage
Early Arthritis
Joint Pain
Hypothermia
Heated Clothing works with the body by supplementing the body's natural ability to generate heat. Adjusting the intensity of the heat allows the user to stay warm and comfortable in a wider range of temperatures without tapping into the resources the body needs to maintain it's other health dependant functions.
Warmth without Bulk
Many people today layer clothing to offset the different ranges of temperatures encountered throughout the day. But now you have heated clothing, which requires only one additional layer of clothing. This layer serves as a buffer between the generated heat and your skin, evenly distributing the heat over your skin.
To further add to your riding pleasure, you can regulate the amount of generated heat with a Temp Controller. Just dial in your desired heat according to the riding conditions of the moment. For those long rides, or just getting cold due to the lack of movement, dial up the heat!
Now you can concentrate more on that next destination rather than how much farther you can ride before the cold endangers your ability to ride a few more miles. Don't let the temperature end your last ride of the season. When your fellow riders are complaining about being too cold ... just smile and dial up the heat!
Q: What happens if I get wet? A: Nothing. All of our wiring is plastic coated and there would be
no shock from getting wet.
Q: Can I use one temperature controller to power two people? A: No, each person must have his or her own power cord and temperature
controller. The power cord would be overloaded with two outfits.
Q: Can I use the dual temperature controller for two people? A: No. The same power cord is used and would be overloaded.
Q: Which plug on the jacket is for power in? A: The long cord is for power in. The short cord is for accessories,
like pants or socks. On a custom ordered liner, set-up for a dual temperature
controller, the cord closest to the zipper powers the jacket and the middle
cord powers the gloves.
Q: How much power will I draw off the battery? A: That depends on which garment you are using. Refer to the standard
form for reference.
Q: Can my bike handle the draw? A: Give the customer the pertinent information on each item of clothing
and refer them to their bike's owner's manual and to their motorcycle dealer.
Q: Is my heated clothing waterproof? A: We use the term water-resistant. The gloves have a waterproof
membrane, but the leather has not been treated. The fabric on the outerwear
is all water-resistant.
Q: Can I wear my liner as an outer jacket? A: Not when you are riding. The fabric and stitching are not made
to withstand the excessive wind you will get on a bike. They are meant to
be worn under a wind-resistant jacket. You may wear them as an outer jacket
when walking around.
Q: I have an older jacket with SAE glove plugs, but these new
gloves won't work with it? A: You have several options. You can purchase adapter plugs , or
you can send the jacket to Gerbing's to have the plugs upgraded .
Q: Can I wash my Gerbing's jacket liners, pants, or socks? A: Yes, hand wash in Woolite® and hang to dry.
Q: How tightly can I package, roll, or twist my garments? A: You may pack, twist, or roll your liner as small as the Stuff
Sacks available through Gerbing's Heated Clothing
Wearing Gerbing's heated clothing keeps you warmer than you have ever been. To enjoy the most warmth from your heated clothing, follow the instructions below. Enjoy your ride and ride warm!
Connecting your Gerbing's battery harness to your battery
Your motorcycle's electrical system directly powers your heated clothing. Your Gerbing's battery harness connects your Gerbing's clothing to your battery. To use your clothing you must first attach your battery harness to your 12 volt battery (unless you use a BMW plug instead).
Access your motorcycle's 12 volt battery.
You must disconnect the negative bolt and cable first. When you install the battery harness you must connect the positive bolt and cable first.
Negative Terminal
Remove the bolt that holds the negative battery terminal in place. The negative terminal is marked on the battery post with a -.
Identify the negative wire of your battery harness. The negative wire does not have the fuse in-line.
Positive Terminal
Remove the bolt that holds the positive battery cable in place. The positive terminal is marked on the battery post with a +.
Identify the positive wire of your battery harness. The positive wire has the fuse in-line.
Replace the positive bolt and cable first. At the end of your battery harness is an o-ring connector. Place the bolt through the o-ring connector and tighten.
Next reconnect the negative bolt and cable. At the end of your battery harness is an o-ring connector. Place the bolt through the o-ring connector and tighten.
Route the battery harness to the left side of the motorcycle. Make sure the wires will not rub or be pinched between the frame and the seat.
Let the battery harness plug hang a couple of inches out from under the seat on the left side.
Zip-tie or use electrical tape to safely attach the wire to the frame or other points on the motorcycle to prevent the wire from moving.
Double check that your battery terminal bolts and cabling are correct and tight.
The accessory plug on many BMW bikes is strong enough to power Gerbing's heated clothing, though most newer models require a direct connection to the battery. We sell a modified BMW plug that replaces the battery harness for your connection to your bike's electrical system. This modified plug connects to the BMW accessory plug-in on one side and Gerbing's temp-controller or on/off switch on the other side.
Always use a Gerbing's battery harness or modified BMW plug to power your clothing. This insures full power to the clothing and a solid, trouble free connection. Also, do not adapt or modify Gerbing's plugs. Other brands are wired differently and do not work with Gerbing's clothing.
Connecting your Gerbings heated clothing to the
battery harness
Gerbing's heated clothing forms a true interconnected system in which every item connects to everything else. You can wear a jacket, gloves, pants, and socks with only a single connection to your battery.
The long wire coming out of the jacket is the power cord, which connects to your battery harness.
The shorter wire coming out of the jacket connects to the pants. (If you are wearing Gerbing's pants without the jacket, then connect the pants cord directly to the battery harness.)
The gloves connect to the plugs at the end of the jacket sleeves (or to a connecting harness when ordered alone).
The socks connect to plugs inside the bottom of the pant legs (or to a connecting harness when ordered alone).
Connecting your Gerbing temp-controller (or on/off
switch) to the battery harness
Gerbing's heated clothing is designed for serious warmth, warm enough to keep you comfortable in below freezing temperatures. So when riding in less than extreme conditions, there must be some way to control the heat and reduce your power draw at the same time. When using our heated clothing, you can use a simple on/off switch. We strongly recommend a Gerbing's temp-controller, however, so you can dial in your comfort level and enjoy the rest of your ride without having to manually control the heating system.
The temp-controller or on/off switch is plugged into the garment on one side and plugged into the battery harness (or modified Accessory plug) on the other side.
For permanent temp-controllers only, make sure that the positive (+) wire from your temp-controller is hooked up to the positive wire on the battery harness and the negative (-) wire from your temp-controller is hooked up to the negative wire on the battery harness. Reverse these wires and the temp-controller will not work. Be sure to read all instructions provided with the temp-controller.
Use only Gerbing's temp-controller for a solid connection and proper operation.
Do not attach the temp-controller to a different power source other than your bike's electrical system. Otherwise your temp-controller may malfunction and void the warrantee.
The portable temp-controller fits in your pocket or attaches with Velcro® to the motorcycle or tankbag. The permanent temp-controller hides the unit and mounts the control knob and LED in the fairing or saddlebags. Do not try to mount the portable unit as a permanent model.
Electrical Draw
Having your heated clothing run at optimal levels depends in part on the health of your electrical system.
If you have a problem, first check all connections for tightness and wires for proper routing and insulation integrity. Also check the fuse.
Some motorcycles' charging systems do not put out full power when the rpm's drop, such as when in town or idling. You may wish to turn down the heat when you come into town.
Other accessories use up electrical power needed to power your heated clothing. Add up your power needs and subtract them from your alternators peak power output (available from your dealer). For example, if the bike puts out 280 watts, and 130 watts are needed to run the bike, then 150 watts remain. There is plenty of power for a Gerbing's jacket or jacket liner at 77 watts.
Wearing your Gerbing's heated clothing
How you wear your heated clothing with other clothes can either enhance or detract from your overall comfort. Follow the tips below to obtain the most warming heat.
Jacket liners, pant liners, and vests work best when worn under windproof clothing. Wind takes the heat away.
Our outerwear is windproof due to the urethane coating on the fabric.
Wear only one layer under Gerbing's clothing. A long-sleeved turtleneck under a coat or liner is ideal.
Pant liners don't work well under denim pants. If you wear denim its best to wear Gerbing's outerwear.
If its real cold outside, wearing raingear enhances the warming effect by sealing out more wind.
Care of your Gerbing's heated clothing is simple. Just hand wash any of our clothing, except for the leather gloves, and let hang dry. Do not dry clean. Washing your clothing does not void your lifetime warranty, so do not worry about breaking any wires or connections. Our clothing is durable, and if a problem ever develops with the electrics, we will fix it for free -- forever.
WATERPROOFING
Most of our products are either waterproof or provide a high level of water resistance. However, we are also proud to offer high quality cleaning and waterproofing products from NIKWAX®. These products will help prolong the life and enhance the performance of your Gerbing's heated clothing.
Some people who are new to our heated clothing naturally worry about how
well the heating elements will wear over time. No matter how often you crumple
(or even fold?) your heated clothing to fit in a stuff sack, no matter how
many years you own your heated clothing, we are confident that our heating
system will continue to function flawlessly. How confident? The answer is
a lifetime. To quote from our warranty card:
When you purchase a Gerbing's heated garment, the electrical
components of the garment are warranted to be free from factory defects in
materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the garment.
OK, so how well does this warranty work in practice? As best as anyone at Gerbing's can remember, our record to date is 16 years. In 1998 we had a customer return a jacket purchased in 1982. After 16 years of use, one of the heating wires had finally loosened, resulting in a cold spot at the front of the jacket. Within two days of receiving the jacket, we had opened it up, secured the broken connection, further strengthened the remaining connections, and returned the jacket to our customer. The only cost to our customer was shipping and handling.
A couple of items to note about this example. First, in the rare event of a broken connection, our heating system does not fail, just the affected heating pad. (We wire our pads in parallel instead of serial.) Second, we have improved our quality even more than when we made this jacket in 1982. Over a quarter of century of experience gives us an understanding of what you need and how best to provide for your needs. For Gerbing's, lifetime really does mean lifetime.
General One-Year Warranty
The non-electrical components of our clothing are warranted for one year after purchase. To quote from our warranty card:
All other [non-electrical] components of the garment are
warranted to be free from factory defects in materials and workmanship for
a period of one (1) year from the date of the initial purchase.
You find anything wrong with the sewing or materials of any clothing you buy from us within the first year that was due to our negligence or mistake, or if any problem develops during the first year due to our negligence or mistake, we will fix it for free. All you do is pay for the shipping and handling.
30-day Return Policy for Sales Direct from Us
Some customers are hesitant to buy clothing over
the phone because of concerns regarding fit, color,
and other aspects that cannot be verified until
the garment is worn. Rest assured that if you dial
0800 014 34 33 and order heated clothing direct
from us, you can return any product you purchased
from us for a full refund within 30-days of the
purchase. Of course, the product needs to be in
new condition, but if you find problems with the
fit, color or whatever, you can always exchange
or receive a full refund within the 30-day period.
The reason for a return is yours and yours alone.
We will ship a replacement for free.
2-year Warranty on the Temp-Controllers
Gerbing's Temp-Controllers are warranted from factory defect for two years from the initial purchase. Any alteration of the product voids the warranty.
In the 1970's Gordon Gerbing owned a small machine shop just south of Seattle that primarily produced parts for Boeing airplanes. Several of his employees rode motorcycles to work all year, even through the Seattle winter chill and dampness. Gordon noticed the discomfort of these employees when they arrived at work after a cold morning's winter ride. His goal? Look for a way to keep these riders warm. His answer? Wire motorcycle clothing with heating pads and connect the pads to the bike's electrical system.
In 1976 Gordon founded Gerbing's Heated Clothing, Inc. For the first 10 years of the business Gordon spent more time running his machine shop, but slowly the demand and interest in his heated clothing began to grow. Finally, in the late 1980's Gordon's "hobby" became his full-time passion. He and his wife Marilyn sold the machine shop and moved to Washington's Olympic Peninsula. Here Gordon and son Jeff by themselves literally built the first building for Gerbing's Heated Clothing.
As time went on, more and more riders realized that they could ride warm and comfortable on even the coldest, windiest and rainiest days. Much of the growth of the company in the early 1990's resulted from Gordon tirelessly doing the summer and winter motorcycle show and rally circuits, showing customers first hand the benefits of heated clothing. One of Gordon's most effective displays was to hook up his heated gloves to a common automobile battery charger. That way customers could directly feel the inviting warmth. The result was sale after sale and many, many satisfied customers. Some customers would walk by Gordon's booth during the following years at a particular rally and enthusiastically announce to everyone within range how happy they were with their heated clothing, and how much Gordon cared about making sure each of his customers was personally satisfied.
As more and more people learned of the benefits of heated clothing, the Gerbing's business continued to grow. Plus, the electrical output of the typical motorcycle continued to increase as motorcycle engineers addressed the growing demand for electrical accessories. The result is that all but the smallest bikes can now provide the power needed to generate the needed heat.
The year 1999 marked another stage of growth when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company selected Gerbing's to be the sole supplier of Harley-Davidson label heated clothing. Another milestone is the beginning of the authorized motorcycle dealers program in August of 2001. Only top-quality, respected dealers who provide high levels of service for their customers are selected into this program. The result is that Gerbing's customers have more options than ever for staying warm.
Through all the growth, our emphasis on quality and service has remained. Gordon and Marilyn still spend much of their day at Gerbing's. Gordon's son Jeff is now the CEO. Gordon's son David is responsible for computer operations, including the customer database and this web site. Gordon's son Bob answers many phone calls and provides technical support to our customers. In addition, Dotty Gerbing is the office manager; Lonita Larson is in charge of quality control and is the production manager; Craig Bennett and Karol Patzer are our dealer representatives; Cupid Roberts runs research and development; Chris Haffly is in charge of the Golf program and business development; and Dan Karst heads up our Hunting and Fishing Outdoors division.
Our goal is to maintain Gordon's original vision of making a quality product at a fair price that genuinely improves the lives of our customers. And, in the end, that is just plain fun. Thank you for your support and we look forward to serving you in the years to come.
